How to update your system (Windows or Mac)

USC ITS recommends that you install the appropriate security patches from your operating system’s manufacturer before you connect your computer to the USC network.

If you have recently purchased your computer, you should have the necessary security patches installed.

  • Click on the Start (Windows) button from the bottom-left corner.
  • Go to Settings (gear icon).
  • Select the Update and Security icon.
  • Choose Windows Update tab in the sidebar (Circular arrows)
  • Select Check for updates. If there is an available update, it will begin downloading automatically.
  • After the updates are installed, you will need to restart your machine to complete the install.




  • To download macOS software updates, click on the Apple menu icon on the top left side of the screen.

  • Select System Preferences

  • Choose the  Software Update option (gear icon). (Another way to access the updates is the Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Software Update.)

    We do not recommend updating to macOS Catalina at this time due to software compatibility issues.
  • To update software downloaded from the App Store, choose Apple menu > App Store, then click Updates.
